If I were to be asked what my favorite all-time First Person shooter is, I'd be hardpressed not to instantly blurt out "Halflife". When I think of Halflife, I think of the first time I loaded up the game on my pc, turned off the lights, and had my wits scared right out of me night after night as I took down the freakish monsters that came after me.

As most people know (but for those who don't), in the original Halflife, you were Freeman, the scientist (along with others) who started a chain reaction within the top-secret science facility you worked at. After an experiment goes wrong, other dimensional creatures start appearing inside the facility. Your objective was to get out of the huge complex while navigating through the destruction that has been caused by the experiment. Oh and I wouldn't want to forget, the military, black-ops, and other freakish things to you ran into.

Along the way, you met up with other scientists and security guards can and will help you should you need them. Some forms of help came in them assisting you passed doors that required identification, and some, in the case of the security guards, came in the form of firepower. In Blue Shift, you get to be one of the pistol-packing, do-or-die, John Wayne wannabe security guards and more specifically, the guard who allied with Gordan Freeman. Designed to run parallel with the original storyline, you will get the chance to see things from a different perspective.

Graphics/Display:

I scored the graphics low simply because we've been seeing them for quite sometime now. Valve did a fantastic job with the Quake 2 engine for it's time, and even then it was outdated, but here they are still using it. It's nothing personal, I mean, what else were they going to use to keep the HL feel to the game? But regardless, the graphics are dated when you see new mods coming out almost daily for Quake 3 and UT with some pretty stunning sights as developers are still unlocking the power behind those engines.

Interface/Controls:

Standard issue FPS sir! Map the keys to your liking as you would for any other shooter. Fully customizable. Support for any variety of combinations. Keyboard/mouse, mouse/joystick, etc.

Multiplayer (if any):

I have not been out looking for servers so I cannot accurately rate the multiplayability. From Sierra's site, "32-Person Multiplayer. Battle opponents from around the world in Capture the Flag and more Half-Life online games." Ok, sounds good to me, but I'll stick to Counter-Strike. =)

Summary:

For those of you out there looking to add to your Halflife collection, this is a must buy. For those who haven't ever played HL, or you played the original and havent touched it since, then this just might get you going again. The game comes with "Opposing Force", another add-on for HL that allows you to play the game from the military's perspective. Compared to the original, it was short-and-sweet, but combine all of these together and it's one heck of a deal. I highly recommend picking this up.
