Halflife is a breath of fresh air in a dull world of first-person shooters. When I first saw this game, I was speechless. Graphics are suberb on the Voodoo ][ chipset. I was really impressed with what they did with the Quake engine. One of the best qualities of the game was the feeling of being there. The sense of being part of the story rather than looking into a game really helps to create what a first person shooter really should be. Halflife takes you into an intriguing plot and lets you solve different problems in a variety of different ways. This is no Doom clone, I assure you. You won't be left holding the red, gold, and blue keys and wondering where the hell the end of the level is. I liked the ending but this is the only place in the game I was let down. I won't say anything else so that I don't give it away. :)

Graphics/Display:

WOW. I mean look at those textures. I think I saw one spot where there was a flaw with the graphics. Updated my Voodoo 2 drivers and it went away. People talk about the limitations of the Quake engine and all I have to say is "What limitations?" My only complaint would be the 3 or 4 models they used for each category of character. I think it may have been better if they had spent a little more time on character models rather than cloning all of the scientists. They got away with it in regards to the military since they should all be dressed the same anyhow.

Interface/Controls:

I was very impressed with the sounds. The "alien" gurgling and the crunching of the ceiling monsters chomping on guards and scientists was great. Really made me want to try and save someone when they were getting eaten. Sometimes the sounds were just plain disgusting.. It was great.

Multiplayer (if any):

I liked the multiplayer action in regards to use of the weapons. There is nothing like blowing a buddy away with an explosive tipped arrow or sniping them from long range and watching them die. :) The player models moved a bit awkward reminding me of Unreal a little bit but resembling Quake enough to satisify the typical Quaker.

Summary:

Overall I enjoyed this game immensely. Typically, I'm hard to please but I think Halflife should definately get Game of the Year (Unless something better comes out) :)
