Quake 3 Arena

When I first heard that they where designing this game, I thought that this was just going to be Quake II designed for multiplayer with all the numerous mods (add on packages)that ID Software deemed good enough to package. While this is true, the game offers much more. No more running around killing pre-programmed monsters that line themselves up for a one-by-one slaughter. Now, in single player mode, your up against AI that is intent on running you down and splattering your guts all over the map. You kill them, they come back to life! No more of this 3-5 lives and the game is over. The object is to finish in the top 3 positions with the most kills (frags). Usually, the first person to reach 20 frags is the winner. Be forewarned, the AI on harder settings get extremely deadly! Of course there is always the Multiplayer Madness. Any game that comes out these days is pretty much expected to have some sort of multiplayer capabilites, either via LAN or the internet. This game supports both. The single player mode really isn't much, and is thrown in primarily to prepare you for multiplayer.

Graphics/Display:

The graphics really surprised me, even when the game was still in playtest mode. ID Software spent a lot of time and effort beefing up the graphics engine, and it shows. Some of the scenery is actually breathtaking. The graphics are extremly smooth and fluid, even on my now almost outdated PII 400 Celeron w/128 Megs of Ram and a VooDoo 3 3000.

Interface/Controls:

Being the hard core Quake II CTF player I am, this game was very easy to adjust to. I must admit, that there where times I kept hitting my grapple button key from Quake II Expert CTF, just hoping that the grapple was there. The keys are fully customizable, making it very easy to set up and go. Just about any combination of keys/mouse or joystick combination is available to the player.

Summary:

Gameplay is pretty standard for a first person shooter game, such as this. If you have played any sort of first person game at all (Doom, Quake, Quake II,Delta Force, etc), then you pretty much understand the gameplay. Shoot or be shot! The madness..the carnage..it's all in there! I was extremly impressed with this game. If you enjoyed playing Quake II Multiplayer either on a LAN or the Internet, you are in for a treat. This game takes Quake II Multiplayer and enhances the gameplay and the graphics. Alot of your favorite mods are already built into the game, such as CTF and Deathmatch. To be perfectly honest though, I can't wait to see the mods that the awesome programmers out in the Quake community come up with. In particular, I can't wait to see what the author of Expert CTF manages to come up with! (Go Myrkul!)
