Sinistar Unleashed

When I was about 10 years old, one of my favorite things to do was to ride my bike up to the donut shop and plug my allowance in the Sinistar machine there. If you were famaliar with the arcade stand up, you know that this game was a real pain in the ass but had quite the addictive quality to it. I wonder if I ever even beat the 1st level on that game due to it's difficulty. For those of you who don't know what I am talking about the lowdown on the original Sinistar is this: You fly around in an "Asteroids" type top-down perspective (much better graphics though) and shoot asteroids for crystals. These crystals are converted over to bombs called "Sini-Bombs". Unfortuantely there are bad guys in there stealing the crystals as you mine them and they use them to build the Sinistar. Once he is completely built, he comes after you. He is quite a pissed off individual as well. One of the flaws I felt the game had was it was impossible to beat him. If you faced him head on, he killed you. If you ran, he ran after you faster. No where to run, no where to hide and I never could get off enough shots on him before I was devoured. Very frustrating.

Sinistar Unleashed puts a whole new spin on the original arcade game. First off, the most important change is you are now in a 3D space shooter. (Similar to Rogue Squadron) You have multiple power ups as well as new weapons to choose from to add to the exicitement of the game. The rest of the game is the same. Drones attempt to build the Sinistar as you mine for "sini-bombs" and other weapons. Once the Sinistar is built, he comes for you quite pissed off. Only making it to level 2, I was pleasantly suprised to see that "mini-boss" at the end was different then the one in level 1. But after all of that, I find myself getting bored pretty quick. Not only is it the same thing over and over already, but I lost so many ships trying to kill the first guy that I can't beat the 2nd bad guy. While I manage to get off one Sini-bomb shot on him during a pass, his shot doesn't miss and I'm swamped with dieing within 2 passes. Running again does no good because he eventually catches up to you.

Graphics/Display:

Very nice. Only lags when the mini-boss "goes off" with his green cannons. It could be the latest V3 drivers giving me a hard time though. Attention to detail on ships and the asteroids are great. And the Sinistar is pretty impressive if I could look at him closely but I'm too bust running for my life.

Interface/Controls:

Typical space shooter/simulation/arcade style. Very smooth and everything I need is pretty much on the joystick to make things easy. No complaints.

Multiplayer (if any):

x

Summary:

In the end, I'm afraid that this game's biggest feature is the eye-candy. I mean, it looks great. But as usual I find myself already returning to playing other games that have been around forever (like Diablo) since Sinistar Unleashed can only seem to entertain me for so long.
